Change in our daily lives is inevitable, reoccurring, and at times extremely stressful. We as humans strive for stability and homeostasis in our lives because life is simpler if it is predictable.
Predictability is not a bad thing to have in our lives. We have to have predictability and stability to make sense of our world. Thus, it makes sense that we do not always seek out change unless something in our lives is really not working. Even when something is not working, we still may resist.
When I work with many individuals, I am often told about a new change in their lives that is horribly awful, no good, can’t do it, etc., etc., etc. Sometimes this response is our first response without even considering the change itself. Do we even consider what it is we are resistant to? Darwin said, “It is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones who are the most responsive to change.”
I want to open the discussion on 4 areas to evaluate when you are facing changes. The first one is related to your environment whether it is your home, work, school, etc. The second one has to do with relationships and the real or perceived effect the change may have on them. Then, we will talk about you. Are there aspects about you that hinder thinking about change? Finally, we will discuss the change itself.
Think about where the change is supposed to occur……home, work, social activities, etc. Does the environment support or hinder the change?
This is often one of the biggest areas of concern.
Our environments have been set up to accommodate what is currently going on in our lives. Basically, we have many events that compete for our attention or one takes precedent over others. Think about what you get or get away from during other events. This is very important to really think about……
You might have your environment structured to reduce social interaction because you like your alone time. Your desk at work may be positioned away from others. However, the change you are considering increases social interaction because you are working with a team now. Your physical environment is not set up to accommodate the change.
Another example, if you have a work project or your children need to do homework, does the environment help or hinder your work productivity or you child getting homework done?
Ask yourself this…..Are all these events necessary in your environment? Do they have to happen at that time in that sequence? You may be thinking….well yes they do. However, the answer may be yes because you prefer them to happen at this time or in this order. In addition, your environment may not be structured in a way to support the change. You have set routines which is again predictable and stable. Routines make life so much easier. However, your routine, the structure of your environment may hinder change. If you can incorporate the change into the routine or into your physical environment, the change will be easier.
There are many things in our environment and routine which help our current state of affairs. Take a fair assessment of your physical environment, your routines, the order of events, and what we get out of them that hinder or help the change.
