You may be like me….I am accepting of change in many areas of my life. However, sometimes the change required is startling.
So why is that I am more accepting of some change but not ALL change? There are key questions you have to ask yourself when you are resistant and possibly startled. First, you may not always realize the need for change. We all get into well practiced routines at work and at home.
Most of the time these routines work very well for us in that we get things accomplished and we get what we need from the environment, our relationships, etc. However, we don’t always recognize the need for change when something isn’t working. Reflect on how change can make you more aware of your inner dialogue, your reactions to events, etc.
Several reasons you may be resistant is that you have (1) no previous experience with the behaviors, environment, and (2) no successful history with the type of change. We want to be successful. Who wants to fail? We are reluctant to change because we have no prior history. We are more likely to engage in change when we have had successful histories with the type of change required. Think about aspects, behaviors, and what you want to get out of making the change. Can you find dimensions that are similar from your history that will lead to your success? How can you set up yourself for success? How will you define your success? What will be my goals? I will have another blog about goal setting. Come back to check it out.
Finally, there is generally an element of resistance to change because of what we call high response effort. When our previous behaviors, routines, etc. get what we want or get to our end goal why change? We are fluid in our routines which means it takes little effort, high accuracy, and get to our end goal!
So why change?
We would have to deliberately think about each and every step at times. We would not be very accurate with our intentions at the beginning and may not achieve our end goal. This is what we call high response effort. The problem with this resistance is that if we don’t consider the change we may not find more efficient ways of completing a task, more meaningful interactions or outcomes, and/or small changes with huge impact for you and others!
